Simon Cowell Talks "X Factor," Paula Abdul

Posted: 08 Sep 2011 12:28 PM PDT

Opening up about his latest FOX singing competition, his relationship with fellow judge Paula Abdul and the side of him viewers rarely get to see, Simon Cowell chatted with Redbook magazine for their October issue - which hits newsstands on September 13.

Explaining the difference between "X Factor" and other reality talent shows, the famed producer told, "The contestants are all ages—from 12 to 80—and have fascinating backstories. One woman in her mid-40s had gotten out of a horribly abusive marriage. When she sang, she was amazing. We saw the 5,000 people in the audience all get on their feet. That's more powerful than a 17-year-old who comes in and says, 'I want to be a star.' It's like with Susan Boyle, where I got it completely wrong. I'd written her off before she started singing and got a sharp wake-up call in front of millions."

As for why he wanted to sit at the judges table with Paula again, Simon says, "I do really like people who disagree with me. Probably my best friends in the world are the people I argue with the most, because they don't always say what you want to hear. From the minute I met Paula, I was fascinated by her. She's a complex person, but—this is going to sounds very American—she's got a great heart."

Speaking of a good heart, Cowell revealed that he isn't always so harsh, telling that he often gets sad when he watched "Bambi," as he explained, "That scene where Bambi's mum gets shot is sad! I swear to God, I'm a softie for that stuff. You don't believe me do you?...Believe me. I promise you, I wouldn't say it unless it was true.."

Though nothing has been made official, the "Chasing Pavements" songstress hinted at the gig during a recent inverview.

Adele told press that she hasn't written a song since May, though she will be going to the studio to write and record "one song," a "theme" in November.

The new James Bond film isn't due to hit theaters until November of 2012, so we may have to wait awhile to hear Adele's voice teamed with the spy series.

Elisabetta Canalis Talks Clooney Breakup

They were one of the hottest international couples in the world, and when George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis split up, she took it pretty hard.

The Italian super-hottie, who is on the new season of "Dancing with the Stars," blames herself for the breakup.

Elisabetta explained, "At the end of the day I have always seen the end of my relationships as a personal failure. There is nothing ever pretty in saying goodbye."

"I'm a bit of a tomboy, but when it comes to love I am a doormat. I'm looking for men who can give me security. I have always seen cold and controlled men as the right ones for me. You have to accept that Prince Charming who is coming to save you is not going to happen -- it works against you."

But it sounds like she's grown from the experience. "In the past I would self destruct when it came to love - I was immature, throwing myself into things but now times have changed, I want a relationship where you understand the other person."
